Jorge Penaloza Giraldo

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Jorge A. Peñaloza-Giraldo is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Earth System Modeling Group within the Climate Change Science Institute at 91°µÍø. He specializes in integrating and developing advanced computational models to address challenges in coastal ecosystem processes. His expertise spans fluid dynamics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), turbulence, and sediment transport mechanics, covering both cohesive and non-cohesive sediments. His current research focuses on deciphering feedback mechanisms at terrestrial-aquatic interface by enhancing the ecological and hydrological components in the Earth System Model (E3SM) to advance the understanding of vegetation dynamics and biogeochemical cycling in these systems.

Before joining ORNL in June 2024, he was a Graduate Research Assistant at the Center for Applied Coastal Research at the University of Delaware, where he developed an innovative modeling framework for cohesive sediment transport and flocculation dynamics in the wave and current bottom boundary layer. Prior to that, during his time in Colombia, he gained experience as a researcher, lecturer, and faculty assistant at four Colombian universities and two government institutes.
